1. A baby continues to die every three hours in the United
States from Unexplained Cause or Suffocation with a soft
object.
2. The death rate in England is much lower than the United
States, since a link to a possible accidental poisoning was
identified and made public by the media.
3. A poor, unmarried mother's risk of having an unexplained
infant death is 3 times greater than that of a married mother. This
risk increases for each subsequent child. Afro-Americans have
a risk that is 3 times greater than Caucasians. Daycare
Centers are now becoming a focus according to the American Academy
of Pediatricians.
4. An older previously used mattress is in all likelihood
related to unexplained infant deaths, because studies indicate the
incidence is 2-3 times greater than for new mattresses.
5. Poorer mothers, Afro-American mothers and daycare centers
usually have little choice but to constantly re-use crib mattresses.
The older age may be directly related to morbidity and mortality.
6. Crib mattresses, since the early 1950's, are usually made
from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which contains chemical compounds
composed of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony.
7. The gas forms of these three chemical compounds, even in
small amounts, are extremely toxic, especially to newborns.
8. The gases of these compounds can appear naturally in our
environment by a process of biodegradation. Mildew or molds can
release these gases.
9. These poisonous gases have been demonstrated in the
laboratory when PVC and mildew, taken from used crib mattresses, are
incubated together.
10. Tissue samples among babies who have died in England from
unexplained reasons have shown high antimony levels. Antimony is not
found in significant amounts in food or water. Crib mattresses
are the only possible source.
11. Babies, who have died from known causes, studied at the
same time, did NOT demonstrate higher antimony levels.
12. The evidence for a gas poisoning explanation may have been
reinforced by the Back to Sleep program. Turning a baby's face 180
degrees away from the mattress has reduced the unexplained death
rate by 38%. Unfortunately the fact remains that babies continue to
die even on their backs. The majority of babies, it deserves
to be noted, are able to roll onto their tummies by age 5 months.
13. A polyethylene protective cover or a chemical free
mattress has been widely used in New Zealand. Since 1995 no
baby protected from the PVC/mildew environment by polyethylene has
died for unexplained reasons..
14. A group of children in England, who survived the first
year of life, have been shown to have higher than normal antimony
levels. Antimony has properties similar to lead. No one has studied
the potential danger of high antimony levels.
15. Research efforts in England designed to disprove "an
accidental poisoning" explanation for unexplained deaths have
not been totally successful, in spite of editorial claims to the
contrary.
Evidence pointing to an unfortunate and
unpredictable interaction between mildew and the elements
phosphorous, arsenic and antimony cannot and should not be ignored.
A protective cover may be very important and do no harm.
Ultimately, it might be wise for manufacturers to create mattresses
free from all chemicals.
